Are Natural Skincare Products More Effective?

Is it really a good idea to go fully NATURAL and ditch those otherwise considered “bad” chemical skincare products?

Natural skincare has been used by people from way back in the past, and they all believed that everything mother nature has given us is healthy and has healing properties.

In today’s day and age, most products are being marketed as “all-natural” and most consumers believe that because we’ve always been taught that natural is better, which in most cases is true, due to that most natural skincare brands don’t use toxic chemicals or other additives that can be quite harsh on the skin.

But is everything we read and hear real? Are “natural” skincare products actually way better? And should we consider reconsidering using regular skincare products and switching over to natural skincare?

Natural Skincare Products – Are They Way More Effective?

STRAIGHT ANSWER: No, natural skincare products shouldn’t be considered more effective than their chemical-based counterparts. The truth is that, it depends on a lot of factors such as ingredients, ingredient composition, skin type, ad a variety of other subjective factors. Both natural and commercial skincare products have their strengths and their weaknesses and each can be better than the other depending on the type of product in question, and other factors we mentioned above.

What Does Natural Even Mean?

Most companies nowadays use buzzwords like the word “natural” as a clever marketing tactic to get customers to purchase their products. The term natural isn’t even an official term. There aren’t any laws or regulations about it and most companies use these loopholes and make products with one or two sustainably sourced ingredients and then will just slap a label on them and call them natural.

Natural skincare products are products that are made from ingredients derived sustainably from nature. This includes plants, fruits, vegetables, essential oils, water, etc. These products are marketed as safe, non-toxic, and gentle on the skin.

But just because these companies are saying that their products are natural, but sometimes that’s not even true or they might be made with partially natural ingredients. And it also doesn’t mean that these products are tested or regulated.

Natural skincare products have their own benefits and their own downsides.

Benefits You Get From Using Natural Skincare Products

If we are talking about products made from 100 percent natural ingredients then these products are very beneficial for the skin.

Since they’re made of smaller molecules they’re easily absorbed by the skin. And this way they’re more effective in transporting important nutrients to the skin such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.

They don’t contain synthetic ingredients and chemicals that might be harsh on the skin.

They have anti-aging benefits, and ingredients like vitamin C, green tea, and hyaluronic acid can slow down aging and can smooth down any wrinkles and age spots.

Another good thing about natural skincare is that they’re more environmentally conscious and they try to produce and package their products in sustainable materials.

Downsides Of Natural Skincare Products

Some ingredients in natural skincare products might be harsh on the skin and cause skin inflammation or allergic reactions. For example, oils from citrus fruits such as lemon, orange, and lime may cause the skin to become more sensitive and vulnerable to the harmful rays of the sun.

Sometimes if the ingredients aren’t stored or processed properly can become ridden with bacteria and fungi, such as mold, and it can lead to skin infections.

Sometimes Chemicals Might Not Be So Bad

Just like how some “natural” ingredients may not be so safe and better, the same logic can be applied to some lab-created ingredients, and not all of them are toxic or bad.

Most companies use the word chemical for fear-mongering amongst customers, suggesting that those ingredients are very bad and toxic. But most of the time, these chemicals are actually derived from plants.

And not all chemicals are not made equal. If they are used in moderation without going overboard with other safe and effective ingredients, then they won’t cause any harm to the skin.

Many of these synthetic ingredients are safer and better than some natural ingredients. But it’s also worth remembering that some products may contain toxic ingredients or additives, whether it’s a natural or a traditional commercial skincare brand.

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, there is no definitive answer to this question. Natural skincare products can be sometimes better than commercial skincare products and sometimes not, and vice versa.

There are many organic ingredients that are beneficial for the skin, but some can be quite harsh and may cause skin inflammations and allergic reactions. And if something like this happens, you need to visit your dermatologist as soon as possible.

Some chemically formulated products can be safer and better than some natural products. This is because they had to go through a lot of rigorous testing to be able to get certified and legally they can’t have a bigger dosage or percentage of some if not most chemicals.

Some companies are trying to make products by using both natural and lab-created ingredients, to balance each other out. When one of them has a weakness the other one will be there to help it out.  It’s really the best of both worlds when you think about it.

At the end of the day the decision on which product you’re going to purchase falls on to you. But before impulsively buying something pay attention to the label and always read the ingredients list, and always do swatch tests, allergy tests if you have a history of skin sensitivities, and consult your doctor to see what kind of products react well with your skin type.

And always remember if one product works for someone it doesn’t mean it will work for someone else, and vice versa. Always research first!
