How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe?

There are multiple steps on how to make your capsule wardrobe. So, let’s get started.

Step One: Decluttering Your Wardrobe

First things first, it’s impossible to clear out your entire wardrobe in one go. You need to section your clothes into piles such as a pile where you put clothes you want to donate or sell and a pile where you put clothes that you want to keep.

So, if you sectioned out your clothes it’s time to organize them into categories in your closet. Such as:

  • Denim (long and short)
  • Coats and jackets
  • Tees and tanks
  • Tops and blouses
  • Sweaters
  • Dresses and jumpsuits
  • Bottoms (non-denim pants/trousers, skirts, and non-denim shorts)
  • Footwear

Step Two: Tracking What You Wear

This will help you notice what you wear more often and it will help you decide what you want to keep and what you want to take out of your wardrobe. It will help you have a better understanding of your current capsule wardrobe.

Step Three: Choosing Your Essential Capsule Items

After the initial edit and your documentation, it’s time for you to choose which clothes you want to incorporate into your capsule wardrobe.

When you’re doing this, prioritize quality items that are both practical and versatile. Those items should be easily paired with each other and with other clothes, they should be able to be styled in many different ways, and worn on multiple occasions.

Construct your capsule for the current season and concentrate on one category at a time. By focusing on your current needs, you’ll find it easier and more efficient. This way, you can select your favorites, eliminate duplicates, and identify any gaps more effectively by seeing everything all at once.

We’re going to start discussing section by section, starting off with bottoms:

  • Bottoms
    • Bottoms are the main basis of an outfit. They are the best starting point when you’re trying to make an outfit or create a capsule wardrobe. In this subsection, we will focus on non-denim bottoms.
    • You should definitely pick bottoms that fit well, that are comfortable and can be worn with various different tops such as sweaters, blouses, t-shirts, jackets, etc. Although some bottoms may be worn in every season, you probably have multiple bottoms for each season.  For spring and summer, you need to choose flowy light pants, while for autumn and winter, you should pick heavier pants that will keep you warm against the cold.
    • We suggest having at least one pair of black trousers (they look fabulous paired with anything); lighter seasonal trousers; cotton or linen shorts; mini, midi, or knee-length skirts.
  • Denim
    • Another key element is denim. When you start getting dressed you always have to pick denim or no-denim, because it can either make or break an outfit.
    • You need to pick out what kind of style and brands suit you the best, especially jeans. Have different washes such as dark wash, medium wash, light wash, black, or any other color of your desired preference.
  • Tees And Tanks
    • T-shirts and tank tops are another key ingredient in the making of a versatile capsule wardrobe. The beauty of t-shirts and tank tops is that you can wear them during the warm season on their own, and you can also layer them with other blouses and sweaters during the cold seasons. You should always have 1-2 t-shirts in the same or similar color.
    • We recommend having a white, grey, black, beige, or cream-colored tee, and a white, black, or beige-colored tank.
  • Dresses And Jumpsuits
    • When choosing dresses, consider color and sleeve length. Opt for neutral dresses with short sleeves or sleeveless designs that can be layered with cardigans, blazers, or jackets for versatile use throughout the seasons. Midi-length dresses can be a great choice for their versatility and flattering cut, and a fun floral print dress that can be worn multiple ways and on multiple occasions and sweater dresses are always welcome in a capsule wardrobe.
  • Sweaters
    • Everyone should have a sweater in their wardrobes. The right sweater can add some depth and dimension to your outfit, along with warmth.  For warmer springs we advise you to have 1-2 light knit sweaters and a versatile cardigan, and for colder seasons you should have 1-2 midweight sweaters.
  • Tops And Blouses
    • When you’re looking for tops and blouses, aim for ones that can be easily paired with the bottoms that you’ve chosen, and that can be matched with the right shoes, accessories, and jackets. Go for sleeveless or short-sleeved tops that can be layered with a chunky cardigan, blazer, or jacket during cooler months for year-round versatility.
    • Neutral colors are typically more advised, as they’re more versatile- but if you love bold colors and statement pieces you can add those as well.
  • Coats And Jackets
    • An outfit is not complete without a stylish jacket. Always pick coats and jackets that are practical, versatile, and seasonally appropriate. First, pinpoint which jackets and coats you wear the most in each season. Second, store the jackets that you won’t need this season in a separate part of your closet for later use. As always pick lightweight jackets for warmer seasons and more heavyweight jackets for colder seasons. You can never go wrong with a neutral-colored jacket, but a nice bold-colored one never hurt anybody.
  • Footwear
    • I know, I know no one can resist a nice pair of shoes, especially if they’re on sale. When it comes to shoes, having a variety of options allows you to create more outfits with fewer clothing items, rather than having an excessive amount.
    • Here are some of our essential shoe suggestions you should consider adding to your capsule wardrobe: white sneakers, nude heels, athletic sneakers, boots you can wear throughout every weather, flip flops, neutral everyday flats, and strappy sandals.

Step Four: Create Different Outfits

After you finished curating your wardrobe and selected your most important pieces, the next step would be to pre-plan a couple of outfits with the clothes that you’ve decided to keep.

If you pre-plan your outfits it will make it easier for you to get dressed and you will feel much more comfortable having a smaller wardrobe. And that’s what makes this step important as the rest.

Some helpful tips for creating outfits:

  • Find inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram– They’re great sources for inspiration and have an abundance of outfit ideas. You can pin or save them into folders and try to do some of them yourself.
  • Seek out vulnerable points– Whilst trying to pair your outfits you might notice that you can’t make multiple outfit choices with some pieces. Those pieces are the weakest links and you should consider taking them out of your capsule wardrobe and substituting them with other pieces.
  • Keep an eye out for the accessories– Shoes, jackets, and accessories play a crucial role in enhancing your outfit and providing more styling choices, always make sure you don’t overlook these details.

A Few More Helpful Tips

If you liked our tips from above and you want more, well you’re in for a treat. We’ve got you covered! Check out these short but very important tips below:

Always invest in quality sustainable clothes because they will last you longer. Minimize your fashion footprint by mainly rewearing outfits. If you have to buy something new opt for secondhand shopping or purchasing from an ethical eco-friendly brand.

If you notice something missing in your closet or you want to replace an item with a more eco-friendly option, make a wishlist and write everything down that you need.

During the period where you tracked what you wore, you probably noticed which colors you gravitated towards the most. That color palette reference may help you in choosing what colors you should incorporate into your capsule wardrobe.

After finishing your capsule wardrobe you’ve noticed that you got clothes left over that didn’t make the cut to be included in the capsule wardrobe. If they are in good shape you can always donate them or resell them, or if they’re in a poor shape you can always recycle them.

Final Thoughts

Maintaining a capsule wardrobe is all about functionality and versatility, and a bonus helping with pollution reduction and saving money. A capsule wardrobe can be a suitable choice for those who prioritize simplicity and sustainability.

You should always review and refresh your capsule wardrobe with newer items if the ones you have have finished their purpose. You should always take care of your clothes and properly wash and store them so they can last you a long time and keep looking good as new as the day you bought them.

Capsule wardrobes are not a one-size-fits all and they should revolve around your style and lifestyle. It’s important to remember why you want to make a capsule wardrobe and that you shouldn’t beat yourself up if it’s not perfect on the first try.

Try to do it one step at a time, incorporating one small change over the course of time will make it easier for you to adjust yourself to a smaller wardrobe and it will make you significantly lower your shopping trips.

That concludes our ultimate capsule wardrobe guide! We advise you to do more research on your own and explore what works for you more and what brands you like and fit your budget best. Capsule wardrobes should be as personal as possible, what works for me, won’t work for others, and vice versa.
